“Million
Dollar Legs” is like a long-lost Marx Bros. film, with W.C. Fields
channeling his inner Groucho. Imagine pitching this absurd premise: a
misfit country calledKlopstokia, where
everyone is trained from birth to be athletes. Fields, the strongest
man in Klopstokia, becomes its president through a test of strength in
Indian wrestling. But trouble brews as the country faces bankruptcy,
and the solution lies in the American-hosted Summer Olympics in Los
Angeles.
Key Points:
W.C. Fields: The film showcases Fields, who was
still finding his box office footing. Paramount billed him second under
Jack Oakie, but this movie played a pivotal role in elevating Fields to
stardom.
Satire and Political Jabs: Like a
gentler version of “Duck Soup,” “Million Dollar Legs” takes clever
political jabs. It cleverly uses newsreel footage of the Olympics,
saving on location shooting.
Klopstokia’s Quirks:
Klopstokia’s citizens are Olympic athletes by birthright. When the
national debt threatens bankruptcy, enter Jack Oakie’s fast-talking
salesman character. His plan? Recruit Klopstokian athletes for the
Olympics and use them in advertising.
Mata Machree:
Enter the international femme fatale spy, Mata Machree (played by Lyda
Roberti). Her mission? Distract the Klopstokian athletes from the games
by working on their hormones.
Swift Satire:
“Million
Dollar Legs” hits its targets with wit and inventiveness. It’s satire
that could have sprung from Jonathan Swift’s pen 220 years ago. While
not as anarchic as “Duck Soup,” it still delivers laughs and political
commentary.
In
this lunatic lark, Klopstokia’s sheer luck and inventiveness propel it
onto the world stage. And perhaps, just perhaps, there’s a bit of
Klopstokia in all of us—then and now.
